VIDEO: The Kennewick Fire Department released more information on an apartment complex fire that sent at least one person to the hospital Thursday morning. The fire happened on the 900 block of North Cleveland Street at a quadplex just after 4:30 a.m. Fire Chief Chad Michael said everyone in the apartments on the first floor were able to get out of the building safely, however, there were four people trapped on the second floor. Chief Michael said two of those people found a rope and were able to lower themselves down to the ground. The other two were trapped in their home and jumped from their second story window when the building became overcome with fire.
One of the people who jumped suffered a back injury and had to be taken to the hospital. They are expected to be okay. The other person who jumped also suffered a minor injury to their back, but did not choose to be treated at the scene or at the hospital, Chief Michael said. According to some of the people who live in the complex, they reported to firefighters they don’t remember hearing their smoke alarms going off at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The building is destroyed and the people who lived there will not be able to return to their homes.
