Firefighters battle massive fire at metal recycling plant in Vancouver

VIDEOS/PHOTOS: Firefighters responded to a fire sending up large amounts of smoke at a metal recycling plant in Vancouver on Tuesday night. The Vancouver Fire Department says crews responded to a fire at Pacific Coast Shredding at 900 Port Way just after 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

The fire sent up a large plume of smoke near the waterfront. More than 40 firefighters worked to extinguish the fire throughout the night into Wednesday morning. โ€œDue to the size of the pile and the nature of the metal, some of that (material) can react violently to water,โ€ Vancouver Fire captain Joe Hudson said. โ€œBecause itโ€™s in a pile, we tried to apply quite a bit of foam to try and suppress the vapors.โ€

Crews were expected to stay at the scene throughout the day until the fire is fully extinguished. Officials say most of the crews were cleared by 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday and the fire is mostly under control. No injuries have been reported.
