Firefighters battle a large vegetation fire in Pasco

PHOTOS: Pasco firefighters continued to work on a large vegetation fire several hours after it broke out on Saturday. The first call for help came in just after 6:30 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing an empty area of vegetation on fire at the intersection of Road 68 and Chapel Hill Blvd, across the street from a busy gas station.

Within a minute of the call, the first firefighters and officers with the Pasco Police Department were at the scene. The flames spread quickly due to the high wind and heavy smoke from the fire began moving across Rd 68 and Chapel Hill Blvd. Pasco PD shut down access on Rd 68 at West Argent Rd and Chapel Hill Blvd due to low visibility. Firefighters also worked to protect several homes near where the vegetation was burning.

The roadway was reopened a short time later as firefighters put out the blaze. Fire crews remained on the scene for several hours monitoring for hotspots.
