Crews mop up brush fire that threatened structures in Thurston County

Crews mopped up a brush fire that broke out near Shermer Lane in Thurston County on Thursday afternoon. The fire, which was “wind-driven,” burned between 3 and 5 acres, according to East Olympia Fire District 6. Several structures and vehicles were threatened, but they were not damaged. No injuries were reported. Fire officials determined the fire was human-caused. Crews checked for hot spots and mopped up the remains. The Southeast Thurston Fire Authority said they responded on a mutual aid request to East Olympia Fire District 6. There is an elevated fire risk across the region, as a strong ridge of high pressure to the south expands across the area. Abnormally dry conditions are concerning as they provide prime opportunities for fires to break out.
