VIDEO: The Richmond Fire Department is continuing to investigate after two people were killed in a fire on Saturday morning.
According to a release from the department, crews were called to the 1100 block of North 22nd Street for a reported residential structure fire at 8:52 a.m. on Dec. 13.
Upon their arrival, firefighters found heavy fire conditions and immediately began fire suppression operations.
Simultaneously, search-and-rescue efforts were launched, leading to crews finding a 70-year-old woman on the first floor. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 10-year-old boy was found on the second floor a short time later and was also pronounced dead.
Richmond Police Department Chaplain Cruz Sherman told 8News the woman was the great-grandmother of the boy. He also said the boy was a student in a Henrico County Public Schools elementary school.
