Norfolk Fire Rescue crews responded to a fire at an apartment complex on Birmingham Avenue early Monday morning.
Units arrived at 6:39 a.m. and discovered a fire on the second floor of one of the apartments.
Firefighters quickly stretched a fire attack line and extinguished the flames, with the fire under control at 6:50 a.m.
One resident was removed from the apartment and transported to Norfolk General Hospital in very critical condition. The Red Cross was also called to assist two other occupants displaced by the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
