Norfolk apartment fire under control; 1 injured, 20 displaced

A large fire broke out at a commercial apartment building in the 9600 block of 9th Bay Street in Norfolk Wednesday morning.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue says crews were called to the scene around 7:04 a.m. When they arrived, they found a three-story building with flames coming from the left side.

Norfolk Battalion Chief Carrie Jones said firefighters acted quickly when they arrived.

โ€œIt was a very active scene. Our units were laddering the side, and we tried our best to get in there,โ€ Jones said.

Firefighters quickly went inside to fight the fire and search the building. A second alarm was requested but was quickly canceled. The fire was under control by 7:45 a.m.

One person was transported by Norfolk Fire-Rescue from a nearby apartment in stable condition.

The Norfolk Fire Department originally said three occupants from the fire building were displaced, but as the morning went on, that number rose to 20 people.
