VIDEO: The Harrisonburg Fire Department hosted its 17th annual Fire Safety Art Contest Banquet at Fire Station 1 on Wednesday.
Elementary and middle school students designed artwork around the theme of Fire Prevention Week, ‘Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium Ion Batteries in Your Home’.
HFD Chief Matt Tobia praised the work of the students and the fire professionals for their work around community engagement, emphasizing the importance of fire safety education.
“You should be excited about hearing that, and when they say things like ”Hey, we need a meeting place outside the home!” or “Hey, we need to keep our bedroom doors closed!” Because data shows that it saves lives,” Tobia said.
Chief Tobia and the rest of the department recognized the winners of the contest for their artwork, which was on display throughout the firehouse.
