Chesterfield County 9-year-old given Medal of Valor for saving family from house fire

A 9-year-old Chesterfield County girl who saved her family from a house fire in January was recently given a Medal of Valor for her heroism.

Many LifeSave Awards were handed out to firefighters, police officers and everyday citizens alike during Chesterfield County Fire and EMSโ€™ semi-annual awards ceremony in early October. These individuals were all celebrated for stepping up to save a life during an emergency situation.

However, the ceremonyโ€™s highest honor went to 9-year-old Mackenzie Price, who was given the Medal of Valor.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, Jan. 12, a second-floor bedroom in Priceโ€™s house caught fire. Fire officials previously said the fire sparked due to a space heater being placed too close to combustible materials.

The heat of the fire under her bed woke Price up. She then woke her family members, allowing them to escape before the flames trapped them inside.
