A fire at an apartment building in Lyndonville displaced residents in five units early Monday, according to officials.
The Lyndonville Fire Department said they responded to a fire alarm at 70 Depot Street just before 4 a.m.
When fire crews arrived on the scene, they found smoke coming from the third floor of the building. Firefighters found that the fire started in a garbage can in an apartment on the third floor. A sprinkler system had helped to contain the fire, and crews were able to extinguish the remaining flames.
Five of the units were deemed unlivable due to water damage from the sprinkler system.
Investigators have not determined the exact cause of the fire, but it has been ruled an accident.
The department issued a reminder to always properly dispose of smoking material after use and to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly.
