A barn in Charlotte went up in flames on Wednesday morning. Fire crews got the call shortly after 10 a.m.
More than 40 firefighters battled the blaze at the property off Spear Street in Charlotte near North Ferrisburgh, including crews from Charlotte, Hinesburg, Shelburne, Ferrisburgh, Vergennes, South Burlington and Starksboro.
The barn was completely destroyed. Charlotte Fire Chief Jamie Valyou said the blaze appears to be accidental, caused by the failure of mechanical equipment.
He said it is a working farm, but there were no animals inside the barn. The chief also said the property owner tried to put out the fire initially and suffered minor injuries.
Crews were still on scene Wednesday afternoon working to put out hot spots, and the chief said they would be there for a while. Spear Street was still closed in the area as of 4 p.m., so motorists should seek other routes.
