VIDEO/PHOTOS: A semi-trailer caught on fire on I-15, forcing the closure of nearly all northbound lanes near South Salt Lake. Cpl. Eddie Wright with Utah Highway Patrol said a semi-trailer caught fire while driving northbound on I-15 near exit on Saturday afternoon. Wright said the driver safely exited the truck and was not injured. He did not release information on the cause of the fire. The fire sent plumes of smoke into the air in Salt Lake County as first responders worked to put out the blaze.
Officials closed nearly all northbound lanes on I-15 near 2700 South in South Salt Lake, with the exception of the HOV lane. The Utah Department of Transportation advised drivers to use other alternate routes, adding that there will be “major delays” as exit 3300 S was also closed. By 4:45 p.m., the fire had been extinguished, but officials were still working to clear the scene. A fire truck was used to block the highway, and cars were backed up for several miles, being let through one by one using the HOV lane. All lanes were opened by 7 p.m. and traffic returned to normal.
