Ogden apartment fire marks city’s third structure fire in one week

PHOTOS: A three-story apartment project was destroyed in a massive fire, marking the third such incident in Ogden in one week. Ogden residents are expressing concerns after a string of fires, more than one of which involved buildings under construction. The latest ignited Saturday at the 100 block of 18th Street, burning down an apartment complex under construction.

Not only was the project destroyed, but the fire also spread to nearby brush and likely caused a grass fire on the 700 block of 17th Street. “It was just a wall of fire through the trees,” said Brian Doan, Ogden resident. “If it had jumped over into those trees, we have three houses right here that are just 15, 20 feet between the houses. We all would have went up.”

Doan was one of many residents who rushed out as flames erupted just before midnight. “I hadn’t had a fire drill like that since I was in elementary school. Jumped up, grabbed my shoes, ran out the backyard, and I looked through just over the fence,” said Doan. But what has neighbors most alarmed is the frequency and the similarity of these fires. In the past week, two other structures in Ogden have caught fire.
