Monroe Canyon Fire 100% contained after burning over 73,000 acres in Southern Utah

PHOTOS: The Monroe Canyon Fire, Utah’s largest wildfire of the 2025 season, was 100% contained after burning over 73,000 acres in Southern Utah. Fire crews contained the wildfire on Friday, nearly two months after it ignited on July 13 in Fishlake National Forest. Officials said more than 2,400 people from across the country worked on containing the fire over the summer. The fire initially destroyed four structures and forced the evacuation of about 60 homes in Sevier County. Evacuation warnings fluctuated over the months, depending on the fire’s movement.

Fire officials said multiple areas are now open to property owners, including Bagley Ranch, Magleby, Monroe, Bear Valley, Manning, Guard Station, Long Flat, and Porters. The Fishlake National Forest closure area will be reduced starting Saturday at 12:01 a.m. Multiple tactics were used to contain the fire, including building fire lines, using air resources, clearing fuel with masticators and chippers, and conducting prescribed burns. Officials said recent rain was a “significant factor” in containing the fire. However, they said the rain also causes other concerns, such as flooding in the burn scars. The Monroe Canyon Fire is double the size of Utah’s next largest wildfire this seasonโ€”the France Canyon Fire, which burned 34,943 acres in southern Utah before containment.
