Logan Canyon reopens after Rick Springs Fire forces Highway 89 closure

PHOTOS: Logan Canyon reopened after crews contained the Rick Springs Fire, which temporarily forced the closure of a section of US-89. Logan Canyon was closed Tuesday after the wildfire was first discovered that afternoon. Officials with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands said it spread to both sides of US-89. Traffic was being diverted through the Rich County side, with no re-entry into the canyon once departed. While officials did not initially release an estimated time for the canyon’s reopening, traffic was able to pass through on both sides by Wednesday morning, according to the Cache County dispatch center. Officials with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) confirmed that US-89 in Logan Canyon is open between mile markers 476 and 480; however, they said only one lane is open with alternating traffic. The Rick Springs Fire burned 70 acres through heavy timber and was contained within 24 hours thanks to ground crews and air tankers, Utah Fire Info reports. The cause of the fire is unknown.
