DPS Aero rescue crew describes saving BASE jumper near Moab

VIDEO: The dramatic video of a base jumper rescue near Moab on November 12 has been making its rounds on social media, showing members of the Utah Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau team repelling down from a helicopter to save a 43-year-old dangling from his parachute off a cliff after crashing.

The team was able to hoist the base jumper to safety, following an hour and half flight from Salt Lake City International Airport to Kane Creek. ABC4 News spoke to both DPS Sergeant Alan Jensen and DPS Tactical Flight Officer Kristin Brown who were part of the crew seen on camera saving the base jumper.

While comments on social media described their actions as heroic, they thought otherwise. “We don’t look at it as being heroes,” Jensen, who was the hoist operator during the rescue, said. “We serve the counties from our angle as a state asset to assist in search and rescue and locating people that become lost or injured on mountainsides or in backcountry.”
