‘Sounded like a detonation:’ Family escapes after lightning strike sets Lufkin house ablaze

VIDEO/PHOTOS: An East Texas family is safe after lightning struck their home during a storm Tuesday, setting their home on fire with a blaze firefighters struggled to control. James Stewart had just made it home to the 3600 block of Ted Trout Drive and was preparing his kitchen to start dinner when it happened. “All of a sudden, I heard a loud explosion and the house shook, everything shook and immediately behind me sounded like a detonation,” Stewart said. During the thunderstorm, Stewart said lightning struck his home, leaving what he calls a crater in his courtyard. After assessing the outside damage, he learned of a problem inside, his children alerting him of a fire. “As soon as I open the door, I can see the glow flickering orange and yellow,” Stewart said. When he realized the fire was too big to take on, he and his wife rushed everyone outside.
