VIDEO: The San Angelo Fire Department held a promotion and retirement ceremony July 25 at the McNease Convention Center. At the ceremony, Matthew Malleck was promoted to lieutenant and Cody Krueger officially began his new role as SAFD’s newest driver.
The department also bid farewell to Lieutenant Kevin Walker, who spent just under 30 years with the department. After the ceremony, Walker shared what was going through his mind on his last day as a San Angelo firefighter. “I donโt know if you ever forget what youโve done for 28 years with the public,” the new retiree said. “It is a mixed feeling. You know, itโs sad to go and I wonโt see these guys anymore. Twenty-eight years, spending time with the guys, overnight and all day. And now, not being part of that and just being home, is a little different.โ Walker also said, while it will be hard to get away from 28 years served with the department and the friendships made, heโs looking forward to travelling and barbecue competitions to keep him busy in his retirement.
