Pet resort in Trenton evacuates over 20 animals during grass fire

VIDEO: When Carol Edwards arrived at her pet boarding business on Tuesday, her employees called her to the backyard where a large grass fire was growing. โ€œThe fire was so fast and the wind was so strong that we were really fearful with what could happen with the animals,โ€ said Edwards, owner of Paradise Pets Resort. In a split second, she made the decision to evacuate.

โ€œWe gotta load these babies up,โ€ Edwards said. In 15 minutes, Paradise Pets Resort got every furry friend to safety โ€” 20 dogs, 3 cats, and 2 birds. โ€œWe just started loading as fast as we could, the staff was amazing,โ€ Edwards said.

Trenton Fire Captain Zac Bohannon said the grass fire burned 9 and a half acres that day and was quickly approaching the pet resort. He applauds how quickly employees jumped to the rescue.

Edwards said it didnโ€™t take a second thought. โ€œIn todayโ€™s world we no longer have dogs, we have family members and we take that as a very strong responsibility when our guests are here because we know these animals are more than just animals to their home owners,โ€ Edwards said.

No person or animal was harmed by the flames and volunteer fire departments were able to contain the fire. Officials believe it was caused by a stray cigarette butt, demonstrating just how potentially flammable conditions are.

โ€œSo much couldโ€™ve been lost my business couldโ€™ve been, these precious animals couldโ€™ve been lost,โ€ Edwards said. Even though they came inches away from losing everything, the resort still stands with every tail still wagging.
