Massive fire near San Antonio Airport prompts second alarm response

VIDEOS/PHOTOS: A two-alarm industrial fire at a high-tech manufacturing plant near the San Antonio Airport prompted a large emergency response after tanks containing hazardous chemicals were threatened, city officials said.

The fire started around 11:30 a.m. Monday at a building at Meyer MT Texas off Highpoint Street near the corner of Ridgeside and Crosspoint. MT Texas manufactures precision components for the aerospace and gas turbine engine industries, according to the company’s website. Fire officials said the fire has been contained, but about 500 gallons each of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide leaked from tanks at the site.

“At this moment we have about 500 gallons of sodium hydroxide, and 500 gallons of hydrochloric acid that leaked from some of the tanks,” said Woody Woodward from San Antonio Fire Department. “There could be a lot of chemicals that go into that, depending on the type of chemical, how many gallons we’re talking about. Whether the fire has hit the tanks holding those chemicals. There’s a large number of variables that can come into play.”
