Increased wildfires prompt new state legislation efforts to prevent and mitigate fires

VIDEO: Wildfires in Texas have surged in both frequency and intensity over the past two decades, with extreme drought and high winds contributing to nearly 1,100 wildfires that have scorched over 117,000 acres in 2025 alone. According to reports from Texas 2036, the situation is worsening. “Our wildfire season will get longer, and second, greater portions of the state will be susceptible to wildfires,” said Jeremy Mazur, Director of Infrastructure and Natural Resources at Texas 2036. In response, Texas Senator Kevin Sparks is proposing Senate Bill 34, aimed at improving the preparation, prevention, and mitigation of wildfires. The bill seeks to create and maintain a statewide database for firefighting equipment, increase funding for the Rural Fire Department Assistance Program, and develop a plan to enhance emergency communication equipment.
