First Safe Haven Baby Box in Southeast Texas arrives at fire station in The Woodlands

VIDEO: Thereโ€™s a new option for mothers in crisis to surrender a newborn anonymously. The Woodlands said itโ€™s the first city in Southeast Texas with a Safe Haven Baby Box. Itโ€™s a device that allows a parent to anonymously surrender their newborn legally under the stateโ€™s Safe Haven laws. The baby box, available at Fire Station 6 in The Woodlands, is climate-controlled. A mother in crisis can open the door and drop their baby off and it is magnetically locked, setting an alarm notifying first responders. Firefighters can provide medical attention to the child, and supporters said itโ€™s a solution to a challenge that some moms face. “We had several in the Greater Houston area last summer, part of the impetus for this,” Fire Chief Palmer Buck said, referring to at least six cases reported in Houston and Harris County last summer.
