‘Extensive damage’: Firefighter hurt in east Austin fire; resident, pets safe

PHOTOS: Crews with the Austin Fire Department responded to a house fire overnight in east Austin. At 2:47 a.m., AFD said crews continued to work to extinguish the fire, which had spread to the house’s attic. According to AFD, the fire was in the 1000 block of East 8th Street.

Fire crews said all occupants of the residence, which included one person and some cats, were able to get out safely with no injuries. However, AFD said a firefighter had minor burns and was taken to the hospital by Austin-Travis County EMS.

As of 3:30 a.m., AFD said there was “extensive damage” to the house, but the fire was mostly out, with a few hot spots remaining. The department said crews would stay at the scene for the next few hours.

According to AFD, the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, nor does the department know the location where the fire started.
