Corpus Christi Fire Department investing in handheld sonar technology to help with beach rescues

VIDEO: On Sunday, four different people were rescued near Packery Channel — one of them a 14-year-old who was taken to a local hospital. “Summertime, Memorial Day weekend, the Fourth of July — we ramp up our resources out there to have more people available to respond,” said Corpus Christi Fire Department Asst. Chief Juan Perez. Safety measures are top of mind as the holiday weekend marks the start of summer crowds. Perez shared some of his biggest safety advice for families visiting the beach. One of his key tips: Always keep your eyes peeled. “Kind of like, in the fire service we have fire watch, we ask you set up some type of watch for your family,” he said. “When that person gets relieved of the duty, have someone else take over.” Perez said the unthinkable can happen in just moments, but now with the help of new technology they will have an extra pair of eyes to be able to locate anyone who has gone underwater.
