1 killed, 3 burned in explosion at mill in Deaf Smith County

PHOTOS: One person was killed, and three burned, during an explosion at Panhandle Milling in Dawn. About 3:30 a.m., the Hereford Fire Department and Hereford EMS were requested to respond to the plant located in the 4800 block of FM 809 for an industrial accident involving a building explosion.

According to Hereford Fire Marshal Todd Murray, one building was found to be partially collapsed. Additional resources were requested from the Hereford Police Department, Deaf Smith County Sheriffโ€™s office, Dawn Fire Department, Dimmitt EMS, TDEM, BSA, AMR, and Amarillo Fire Department. Three victims were transported to area hospitals with burn injuries from the explosion. A fourth victim — 36-year-old Melissa Mungia — was found in the collapsed building about 6 a.m. Her body was extricated by Amarillo Fire Department at approximately 7:30 am. She leaves behind three daughters. Mungia’s family is asking for “non-stop prayers.”
