New Market fire chief saves woman who initially refused to leave burning home

VIDEO/PHOTOS: The New Market Fire Department helped save a life over the weekend after getting a woman out of her burning home. The department said she initially refused to leave. โ€œAnd when they first got here, smoke was coming out of the eaves of the house, and they went to the front door and located a lady who was in a wheelchair,โ€ said Fire Captain Sammy Solomon. โ€œShe just wanted to stay.โ€

According to Solomon, it is an uncommon occurrence for people to want to stay once a fire has started. He added that the woman never said why she wanted to stay, and the first responders were unable to convince her to leave until their fire chief, Frank Solomon, arrived. โ€œThe fire chiefโ€™s been here almost all his life, and he knows pretty much everybody in the city of New Market, and they know him, and so they pretty much listen to what he has to say and everything,โ€ said Sammy Solomon. โ€œI guess thatโ€™s what you get for living in a small town.โ€ Eventually, the fire chief was able to talk the woman into getting into her car away from the fire, which the department said started from an exhaust fan in her ceiling.
