Firefighters douse fire at mine near Lead

A fire broke out Wednesday at the Coeur Wharf mine, about 12 miles outside of Lead. Several Northern Hills fire departments were called to contain the fire. It reportedly started around 6:55 a.m. as workers were performing scheduled maintenance at the mineโ€™s crushing facility.

The fire was fully put out around 11 a.m. Four people suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out. They have since been released and were cleared to the return to work. According to a statement from the mineโ€™s regional general manager, Ken Nelson, โ€œall on-site personnel are accounted for.โ€ Wharf mine has been in operation since 1982.
