A structure fire was reported at Reptile Gardens in Rapid City around 1:30 a.m. Friday. In a press release by the Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department, the fire was primarily on the South side of the building, which houses some of the reptiles. Heavy fire and smoke were present at a detached agricultural center.
Firefighters have contained the fire to the original building, stopping the fire from spreading to other buildings and nearby vegetation. No injuries to firefighters or people were reported. At the time of the release, an unknown number of tortoises and alligators have died. Reptile Gardens will be closed on Friday.
