Two departments in Berkeley County merge to form South Berkeley Fire District

Berkeley County fire officials announced the formation of the South Berkeley Fire District beginning Oct. 1, to enhance public safety.

Officials announced Tuesday that the merger of two departments, Pine Ridge Fire Department and Goose Creek Rural Fire Department, had been underway for some time with the goal of creating a stronger and more resilient organization by combining resources, expertise, and personnel from both departments.

Chief Ben Waring will lead the South Berkeley Fire District, supported by a command staff consisting of experienced leaders from both departments.

The governing body of the South Berkeley Fire District will be an 11-member board, including members from the Pine Ridge Fire Departmentโ€™s Board of Directors and the Goose Creek Rural Fire Departmentโ€™s Board of Directors.

โ€œThis new district is proud to serve the areas covered by both original departments, including the previously merged communities of Lebanon, Longridge, and Sandridge,โ€ said officials.
