North Berkeley County breaks ground on new public safety campus

VIDEO: North Berkeley broke ground on a new $5.8 million public safety campus on Monday afternoon.

The over 16,000 square foot campus located in Bonneau will house the North Berkeley Fire District and substations for the Berkeley County Sheriffโ€™s Office and EMS.

The campus will be a backup 911 center and will have deputies where residents can come in person and speak with them. They will also have a helicopter pad and boats for calls related to Lake Moultrie and the Santee River.

The goal of the facility is to shorten the response time to calls.

Sheriff Duane Lewis is with the Berkeley County Sheriffโ€™s Office and says the facility is long overdue and is looking forward to helping more of the community.

โ€œThatโ€™s what weโ€™re here to do is respond to calls faster, be in the community and not just driving from Moncks Corner,โ€ Sheriff Lewis says.ย โ€œSo this puts us right here in the center of Northern Berkeley County. It enables us to respond on the calls faster and enable us to help the people.โ€
