Moncks Corner Rural Fire Department announces death of deputy chief

The Moncks Corner Rural Fire Department announced Sunday the line-of-duty death of Deputy Chief Jimmy Townsend.

Officials did not provide details about Townsend’s death; however, they said he died around 3 a.m. Sunday.

Deputy Chief Townsend spent more than three decades in the fire service. Townsend began his career with the Moncks Corner Rural Fire Department in November 1990.

“Throughout his career, he was a steadfast leader, mentor, and friend who stood as a cornerstone of the Berkeley County and South Carolina firefighting community. His passing leaves a void that can never truly be filled,” said Colt Roy, assistant chief of public information for Central Berkeley Fire and EMS.
