Moncks Corner announces death of beloved assistant fire chief

VIDEO: Moncks Corner town officials announced Saturday the death of a beloved assistant fire chief. Assistant Fire Chief Donald E. Wilkins, who dedicated more than five decades to fire service, died peacefully โ€œafter a lifetime of selfless service to his community, the fire service, and the state of South Carolina,โ€ according to the town. Wilkins began his firefighting career in 1968 and joined the Moncks Corner Fire Department in 1991, where he played a vital role in the departmentโ€™s professional growth. โ€œA certified instructor with the South Carolina Fire Academy since 1979, Chief Wilkins logged more than 28,000 teaching hours and helped train over 25,000 students during his remarkable career,โ€ the town said. โ€œHe was also the recipient of numerous honors, including the prestigious Order of the Palmetto and the Clyde B. Spills Instructor of the Year Award.โ€
