VIDEO: Moncks Corner town officials announced Saturday the death of a beloved assistant fire chief. Assistant Fire Chief Donald E. Wilkins, who dedicated more than five decades to fire service, died peacefully โafter a lifetime of selfless service to his community, the fire service, and the state of South Carolina,โ according to the town. Wilkins began his firefighting career in 1968 and joined the Moncks Corner Fire Department in 1991, where he played a vital role in the departmentโs professional growth. โA certified instructor with the South Carolina Fire Academy since 1979, Chief Wilkins logged more than 28,000 teaching hours and helped train over 25,000 students during his remarkable career,โ the town said. โHe was also the recipient of numerous honors, including the prestigious Order of the Palmetto and the Clyde B. Spills Instructor of the Year Award.โ
