Isle of Palms conducting wage study to address first responder turnover

VIDEO: The City of Isle of Palms is addressing first responder wage adjustments.

The city has launched a wage study that could lead to salary increases for police officer and firefighters.

City leaders say the initiative is aimed at improving retention as other Lowcountry municipalities look to raise their own pay rates.

Isle of Palms Council member Blair Hahn said a wage increase recognizes the risks first responders take daily to protect their community.

“We had a shooting out here two years ago, one first responder charged live fire. The man was with a gun shooting at the police officer,” said Hahn. “Well, if you’re going to exhibit that type of bravery and you’re going to protect the citizens of this island, you deserve a working wage.”

Right now, Isle of Palms offers a starting salary of $49,000 for firefighters and $54,500 for patrol officers. As other local agencies’ wages become more competitive, some first responders are leaving the agency for higher pay.
