House fire under investigation in Burton

The Burton Fire District along with MCAS Fire and Emergency Services, Beaufort County EMS and the Beaufort County Sheriffโ€™s Office responded to a house fire early Monday morning. Just after 2 a.m., crews responded to Peaceful Way in the Grays Hill community in Burton. When firefighters arrived on scene, they recognized the home from previous emergency calls and knew that a homeless man had been staying there. Neighbors had also confirmed that a homeless man had been staying there but he had not been seen for over a week. At that point, the home was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control within 15 minutes. However, it took almost an hour to extinguish the fire due to the home collapsing. When the fire was extinguished, firefighters searched for any victims but found the home to be clear. The fire is under investigation.
