VIDEO: Georgetown County Fire & EMS is again looking to become a primary responder for water-rescue efforts. The department had been the primary response for water rescues in the past, but the county sheriffโs office took over that role over time. Brian Ullom, the fire division chief of training, said the goal is to have crews trained in all aspects of water rescue. โWeโre actually doing everything from boat operations to looking at doing search and rescue on the waterway,โ Ullom said. โWeโre in the process of training all of our crews on how to operate the boat, as well as transport the boat to the various landings, trailering, launching and just basic techniques in how to operate the boat.โ A big part of the training is simulating a true water rescue. During past trainings, Ullom said it proved difficult when working with volunteers, leading to the purchase of water-rescue mannequins.
