Bystander recounts dramatic Horry County water rescue

VIDEO: What could have been a tragic afternoon along Highway 17 Bypass on Tuesday turned into community members helping one another in a time of need.

Just before 3 p.m., a vehicle plunged into a retention pond along Highway 17 Bypass, where bystander Erik Maher was able to capture dramatic video of a lifesaving effort carried out in the heart of a busy retail corridor.

โ€œItโ€™s really a blessing that those men jumped in when they did, because the car started sinking so fast,โ€ Maher โ€” who provided his footage to News 13 โ€” said.

It shows rescuers pulling a woman out of the car through the driverโ€™s side window and carrying her safely to a grassy area next to the pond.

The woman and two bystanders who assisted in the rescue were evaluated by medics, but no one was taken to the hospital, according to Horry County Fire Rescue.

Maher, who was in Myrtle Beach on a work trip, couldnโ€™t believe what he saw, and was ready to jump into action himself.
