24 years after 9/11, organizations in South Carolina’s Lowcountry honor victims and first responders

VIDEO: As the nation pauses to remember the September 11 attack 24 years ago, Lowcountry organizations are honoring the lives lost through tradition, tribute and community remembrance.

The Citadel held a memorial wreath ceremony Wednesday in Capers Hall auditorium to honor those who perished in the 2001 attacks. It was hosted by the NYPD 10-13 Club of Charleston, the Citadel First Responders Club and The Citadel Fine Arts. The ceremony included brief remarks, a moment of silence and the laying of a wreath at the campusโ€™s World Trade Center memorial in the Capers Hall atrium. The event was free and open to the public.

The remembrance continues Thursday evening with the first performance of the year by the Summerall Guards, set for 7 p.m. on Summerall Field. The event is open to the public.

The Summerall Guards are a group of 61 senior cadets chosen for their physical stamina and drill precision. Established in 1932, the team represents The Citadel at events across the country, including presidential inaugurations, Mardi Gras parades and performances at Disney World.
