North Charleston Fire Department, North Charleston Police and Animal Control crews responded to a residential fire on Thursday night.

Fire crews issued a smoke notice after a fire destroyed a structure early Wednesday morning in the Socastee community area, according to Horry County Fire Rescue.

Last week the Pelham-Batesville Fire Department announced the passing of Deputy Chief Carey Ballew, who had been a member of the department for nearly 30 years.

Crews responded to the active fire on Southland Drive in the Longs area at around 2:30 a.m. The fire destroyed the home, and one person was transported.
