VIDEO: An investigation is underway after a fire broke out at a scrapyard in Johnston Monday night. Crews responding to the scene at the J & S Scrap Metal and Recycling Center on Starr Street around 11 p.m. were met with heavy flames.
Fire Chief David Iannuccilli said some scrap metal caught fire, but crews quickly extinguished it. He told 12 News that tackling fires at places like scrapyards can be challenging. “We don’t know what’s in that scrap metal, a lot of the time it can be a car, and what’s in the car, we don’t know, so we gotta be cautious when we do it,” he explained. No injuries were reported, and Iannuccilli said the fire did not appear to be suspicious.
