VIDEO: While most teens are soaking up the summer sun, others are training to become the next generation of heroes. Multiple fire companies in York County are hosting the fourth annual Southern York County Fire Camp this week. The program, hosted by the Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Department, Rose Fire Company, Eureka Volunteer Fire Department, and Glen Rock Hose and Ladder Company, gives 37 campers between the ages of 12 and 17 a chance to train like the pros. “These kids are our future, and we are really just hoping that we get any of them,” said firefighter Laura Wede. “If we can spark the interest and give them that call to service and have them be the next generation, [it would be great].” Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner Thomas Cook says two of the biggest problems the state sees with fire service are funding and a lack of people. “This is really rewarding to see because this is our future,” Cook said.
