VIDEOS/PHOTOS: A woman was flown to a burn center after her home went up in flames in Adams County Tuesday morning, according to Cashtown Community Fire Chief Jeff Bowling. A house on Railroad Lane near Knoxlyn-Orrtanna Road in Highland Township caught fire around 5:09 a.m. The homeowner, a woman, was the only one home at the time of the fire, according to the chief. The woman suffered burns to her feet after escaping the home herself, Bowling said. She was flown to Bayview Burn Center to be treated. No firefighters were injured, the chief confirmed.
Chief Bowling said heavy flames engulfed the entire front porch and were quickly spreading to the second floor as well as an addition on the left side of the home. Crews could not reach fast-spreading flames in a void space in the addition, so the fire grew very heavy and was difficult to fight, Bowling said. To get control of the fire, many tankers were called to truck in water and manpower to the fire scene, according to the chief. About 10 to 15 fire departments, including crews from Maryland, responded to fight the blaze. At this time, it’s unclear what started the fire. The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal is investigating. The house sustained extensive damage. Photos and video from the scene show the burning home engulfed in flames.
