VIDEO: Wind-driven inferno destroys Heidelberg Township home near Hanover

PHOTOS: A cat perished, and no human injuries were reported, after a wind-driven fire destroyed a home near Hanover, officials said. Firefighters had been called to the 6800 block of Cannery Court in Heidelberg Township around 4:56 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, according to York County 911 records. Upon their arrival, they found heavy fire from the rear of the home that was being driven towards the front of the home due to high winds, said Porters Volunteer Fire Company assistant chief Dean Warner. In response, firefighters deployed heavy duty hose streams, including a blitzfire portable water monitor, said Warner, which quickly began to knock back the intense flames. Warner said that while no humans were injured in the fire, a cat perished in the fire. Three adults and one child were displaced by the fire, Warner said, and the Red Cross was called to assist with displacement. No one was in the home at the time the fire broke out.

Three volunteers of Porters Volunteer Fire Company resided in the home, according to chief Chris Walker, spurring local fire companies to rally together in support of the four displaced. Donations for the victims can be brought to Porters Volunteer Fire Company, officials said. The cause of the blaze is under review by fire investigators from Northern York County Regional Police, Warner said. A fire investigator was at the scene on Wednesday, and will be continuing their investigation on Thursday morning, he added. Warner said that due to the rural location firefighters relied on water from tanker trucks to supply their attack on the fire. A tanker task force was requested as part of that, he said. Tankers were filled at a fire hydrant in Penn Township, near Hanover Foods, he said. The water supply operations went smoothly, Warner noted, and had no interruption in water for the attack.
