Smoke seen from miles away after fire lights up York County barn

VIDEO/PHOTOS: A fire engulfed a barn in Hellam Township on Monday. According to York County dispatch, the first call came in at 7:06 p.m. in the 600 block of Hillview Road. More than 40 emergency units from Hellam Township police, Wrightsville Fire Department and Lancaster County were called to help. As of 11 p.m., the fire had been contained, but crews remained on scene to put out any remaining embers. News 8 was more than three miles from the scene of the fire, but could already see heavy clouds of smoke billowing into the sky. After arriving at the scene, the barn was fully engulfed in flames with sparks shooting into the air. “As soon as we got close, we’ve seen all the fire trucks, the smoke was, you could just see it. Like I said, when we drove by it the first time, you could see it still resembled a barn. It was like, the roof was on fire, maybe the sides, but in the 20 minutes it took to go home and come back, in that 20 minutes it didn’t resemble a barn anymore,” nearby resident Tammy Mitzel said.
