Large fire destroys belongings at Harrisburg homeless encampment

A large fire destroyed a manโ€™s belongings Tuesday at a homeless encampment in Harrisburg. Harrisburg Bureau of Fire responded around 4:50 p.m. to a fire at the encampment, which is located near PennDOTโ€™s Riverfront Office. Fire Chief Brian Enterline said the fire spread to a 100-foot by 125-foot area. Crews made quick work of the blaze, he said, which appeared accidental. However, a man staying at the encampment lost all his belongings. This is at least the third fire crews responded to at the site this year. Last month, the city announced the encampment would relocate to a new property managed by Amiracle4sure on South 9th Street along the Green Belt. The city will be responsible for trash removal, police, fire and other issues at the new site. An expansion of I-83 forced the move after years of attempts by the city. Relocation of the occupants is ongoing, and many people remain at the site.
