Hispanic Wilkes-Barre firefighter bridges language gap

VIDEO: Juan Muรฑoz, a first-generation firefighter and EMT with the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department, is inspiring others during Hispanic Heritage Month by showcasing his dedication to public service and his cultural pride.

Muรฑoz, who came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic as a child, was sworn in as a firefighter this January alongside seven other new hires. His journey to his dream career began with taking the firefighterโ€™s exam after moving to Northeast Pennsylvania.

โ€œAt one point, this was just a far-fetched dream for me. I thought thereโ€™s no way Iโ€™m going to get on this department,โ€ Muรฑoz said. โ€œAnd all it took was just taking that first step of applying.โ€

Muรฑoz has quickly become an important voice within the department, especially when calls involve Spanish-speaking families. His ability to communicate in Spanish helps bridge the gap and make families feel more comfortable during emergencies.
