Helicopter spots fire in Cumberland County

VIDEO: A helicopter flying over Carlisle on Tuesday night spotted a fire in an abandoned factory. The fire, several hundred feet from any road, already spread to the roof line when someone in the helicopter dialed 911 to report it. Union Fire Company Number Oneโ€™s fire chief said the call led to a much better outcome. โ€œFire growth is rapid,โ€ Fire Chief Matt Hinken said. โ€œIt would probably have taken us a considerable amount of time for somebody to notice it to call for emergency services.โ€ The fire broke out along the 600 block of East High Street at the shuttered Frog Switch and Manufacturing Company. Hinken said the property was a known target hazard to the department. In May, the property received more than $10 million in grants and loans from the state as part of its PA SITES program. The initiative aids recipients to develop competitive sites for businesses.
