VIDEO/PHOTOS: A man was found dead in a silo in Lancaster County on Saturday.
Emergency crews were called to a reported farm rescue in the 100 block of Geist Road in Upper Leacock Township just before 12:30 p.m.
Upper Leacock Fire Chief Larry Miller told WGAL News 8 the man was found dead in the silo after inhaling “silo gas.”
According to the CDC, silo gas is a natural by-product of fermentation that collects in silos within a few hours after new feed is added. As fermentation occurs, nitric oxides and carbon dioxide are released.
The 60 foot tall concrete silo was filled two days ago with high moisture corn product, according to Garden Spot Fire Rescue.
Chief Miller said this year’s warm and humid conditions have increased the number of incidents they have seen.
Miller also said first responders used self contained breathing apparatuses to keep themselves safe during the rescue.
