Dauphin County fire company silences its siren

A fire company in Dauphin County announced it will no longer use its house siren during emergency alerts.

If you live in the area of the Paxtonia 34 Fire Company on 125 South Johnson Street in Harrisburg, you may have noticed that itโ€™s been pretty quiet around the firehouse lately, and there is a reason why.

In an announcement Wednesday, the Paxtonia 34 Fire Company shared that they have decided to turn off the house siren during emergency alerts.

According to the fire company, although sounding the siren has been a long-standing tradition in the volunteer fire service, with todayโ€™s technology, it is no longer necessary.

โ€œWith todayโ€™s technology, along with our combination of paid staff and dedicated volunteers, the siren is no longer necessary,โ€ Paxtonia 34 Fire Company explained. โ€œOur crews now receive alerts instantly through cell phones and pagers.โ€

Additionally, they say that the loudness of the siren makes it harder for personnel inside the station to hear each other and the 911 dispatcher.
