The Sutherlin Fire Department has announced the passing of a former Battalion Chief. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of retired Sutherlin Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Merlino,” Sutherlin FD said on social media. “Chief Merlino courageously battled job-related cancer with strength and resilience. His loss is deeply felt across our department and the entire fire service community.”
With over 30 years of dedicated service throughout Douglas County, the department said “Chief Merlino was more than a leaderโhe was a cherished father, brother, friend, and mentor to many. His legacy of compassion, courage, and commitment will live on in the countless lives he touched.” The Roseburg Fire Department also paid tribute. “It is with great sadness that we have learned of retired Battalion Chief Mike Merlinoโs passing. Our thoughts are with his wife, family, friends, and members of his fire family during this very difficult time. We are at a loss for words, as Mike touched so many of our lives not only in the fire service but throughout our community.
“If you know him, it was an honor. He was selfless, humble, a man of integrity, hard-working, loyal, well-respected, and had the best smile. As so many have mentioned, he was an incredible husband, father, son, brother, firefighter, friend, and so much more. Although his life was taken too early, he left a lasting impression on all that knew him.”
