Scenic Fire near Foster Creek Campground in High Cascades Ranger District grows to 70 acres

A wildfire burning in the High Cascades Ranger District near Foster Creek Campground has grown to an estimated 70 acres. The Scenic Fire was first reported around 4:30 p.m. Aug. 12 and initially burned about three acres in heavy timber. Firefighters quickly responded with multiple resources, including engines, crews, helicopters and other equipment. Additional resources were ordered as the fire grew, and the Oregon Department of Transportation was asked to assist with traffic control along Highway 230. By 7 p.m., the fire had expanded to 50 acres before reaching the current estimate of 70 acres. Officials said extremely dry conditions, gusty winds and elevated temperatures are creating conditions conducive to rapid fire spread. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
